Abstract
Objective: To describe the practice of hysterosalpingography (HSG) at the Military Training Hospital-Teaching hospital of Parakou in Benin. Material and method: It was a retrospective study based on an analysis of the medical records of patients who underwent hysterosalpingography from July 2024 to April 2025. Patients whose records were complete were included in the study. Patients with incomplete medical records were excluded. Variables studied included patient characteristics, indications for the examination, the profile of those requesting the examination, the technical characteristics of the examination, and the results obtained. Results: The mean age of our patients was 33.24±5.72 years (extremes 19 and 48 years). The main indication for HSG was primary or secondary infertility (94.55%), followed by pelvic pain (3.64%), and non-gravid amenorrhea (1.81%). The contrast medium used was water-soluble iodine. Six images were taken per patient. In 25.45% of cases, the examination was carried out without any adverse effects. Pain (67.27%), bleeding (3.64%), and dizziness (3.64%) were the most common reactions to the examination. HSGs were pathological in 40% of cases. The pathologies observed were dominated by tubal obstructions (36, 36%), followed by uterine synechia (7.27%), and hydrosalpinx (5.45%). Conclusion: HSG remains a topical examination for exploring the female genital tract, and its indications are dominated by infertility check-up. Tubal involvement was predominant. The pain experienced by the majority of patients calls for better premedication.
